I always put a lot of thought into gift giving. I love sitting back and taking the time to really think about each individual person in my life – what are they like? What’s going on in their life right now? What do they need, or what’s something they’ve really been wanting? I like to make it personal too. What is something only I would think to get them? What defines our relationship?
This year, I’m less interested in materialistic gifts that “so-and-so” might not even use. I want to give things that I think my loved ones will not only use, but also enjoy and gain some benefit from. This is partially a reflection of where I am now. I’ll never be a minimalist, but I’m consciously working towards it. I’ve been giving away and selling things that I never use, or very rarely use, to make space for the objects I love and use every single day. I’m figuring out what I really like, what I actually need, and how much of it. And typically, what I need and like are things that help me live a healthier, more balanced life.
And I want the people in my life to live wonderful, fulfilling lives too. What can I give them to help them with that? You might be asking yourself the same question now, so let me help you with a list of wellness-inspired gifts!
Essential Oils. I know these aren’t for everyone, but I know a ton of people that love essential oils. I’ve been playing with diffuser blends lately, and making my own products with them, including a Sugar Scrub and a Sleep Spray. If you know someone that loves essential oils, or likes burning candles for the scent, try Saje Wellness. They have an amazing holiday collection, so you can get your loved one a kit to get them started in the world of essential oils. They have a ton of creative diffuser blends, but they also have oil blends for a “Natural Farmacy,” including roll ons for headaches, tummy problems, and minor aches and pains. My mom and I placed a Black Friday order, so I’ll let you know how I get along with them, if you’re interested!
Natural Bath and Body Products. We all know someone in our life that loves relaxing, and we also know at least one person that needs to relax more. Bath and body products are great for both of them. Look into some of the bath salts from Herbivore Botanicals, or the face masks at Little Barn Apothecary. Both companies also have some face mists that I’ve heard excellent things about! Of course there are a ton of other brands out there, but also keep an eye out for local businesses. Little Barn Apothecary started here in Atlanta, but I just went to Fig & Flower, that carries a lot of excellent clean and natural beauty products. For the makeup lover in your life, they carry some of my favorite brands – Vapour Beauty, RMS Beauty, and ILIA Beauty.
Yoga. I’m a yoga teacher – I had to put this on the list! This one could change someone’s life. If you know a yogi that has a studio they love, call them and ask for a gift certificate. Often times you can buy a class card that can be added to their account. Private sessions are another option. Maybe you know someone that really wants to try yoga, but feels intimidated going to a studio, or someone with an injury that doesn’t know how to modify poses in class, or someone that just loves yoga and you think they would enjoy having a class tailored to them. I offer private sessions, so contact me if you’re interested! I can make up a gift certificate and we can schedule our session(s) around their schedule.
Nice workout clothes. Jumping off of yoga classes, try gifting some nice workout clothes. If you know someone that loves to exercise, they will greatly appreciate getting some high quality pants or tops. I wear yoga clothes every day, but there are some brands I’ve really wanted to try, I just haven’t bit the bullet yet. So if someone gave me a pair of pants, or a gift certificate that helped lower the price, I would be so happy. My top pick for yoga pants right now are Athleta, but also try looking into Lululemon, Alo, and Beyond Yoga!
Reusable water bottle. This might not be the most glamorous gift, but one that will be well-used! Do you know someone that drinks water constantly out of plastic water bottles? Or someone that has already expressed an interest in being healthier in 2018 and hoping to drink more water? There are a ton of reusable water bottles out there, but I personally love glass ones – especially this one from Contigo. I carry it with me every day and would have loved to receive it as a gift!
An experience. So, this one is kind of broad, but think in terms of experience instead of “things.” Plan a trip to take together, gift a tarot reading, a relaxing massage, or concert tickets. Look for local events you think your loved one would like, or create your own event for them. One of my students just told me you can take a candle making workshop at Candlefish at Ponce City Market. How fun would that be?! Get creative and think outside the box – literally.
I know, I know, it’s not even December yet. But wouldn’t it be nice to get your shopping out of the way early this year? I hope this guide is helpful, and at least gives you a jumping off point to think about what you want your gifts to mean. This will probably be my only gift guide, but if you have any questions or want more recommendations, please let me know. Happy gifting!
